From Hertfordshire to Hoboken: Cityscape Recruitment’s US Journey

When Cityscape Recruitment decided to expand into the United States, the goal was simple — to bring the same relationship-led, in-person approach that built our UK reputation to a market ready for something different.

In a recent episode of The Search Podcast, hosted by Kayman Recruitment’s Elliot Manning, our US Regional Manager, Danny Cranston, shared the story behind that move — from launching the market remotely to establishing offices in Hoboken, NJ and Manhattan, NY, and how face-to-face recruitment continues to set Cityscape apart.

“There’s only so far you can take a relationship over the phone,” Danny explained. “Construction is hands-on. We wanted our operating style to match our clients’ — in person.”

Starting lean and learning fast

Cityscape’s first year in the US was managed from Hertfordshire — just a spreadsheet, a few contacts, and the belief that the market was worth the effort.
Five or six visits later, the results spoke for themselves. Meeting clients and candidates in person built immediate trust and turned conversations into long-term partnerships.

Understanding the market, region by region

While New York remains the home of Cityscape’s US business, the team also covers North and South Carolina, led by Danny’s colleague Holly. “You only grasp the culture by being there,” Danny said. “Even chatting about local restaurants makes it more personal and less transactional.”

Building a sustainable team

For Danny, growth isn’t about headcount alone. “Each recruiter owns a defined sector. There’s enough competition in the market — you don’t need to create it internally.”

That focus on development, coaching and accountability has seen Cityscape’s US operation grow profitably while keeping its culture intact.

Looking ahead

The next step? Continuing to invest in people and performance. Plans include adding a few new faces to the Manhattan office and exploring future markets like Texas and Florida — always with the same Cityscape approach: personal, professional, and built on partnership.

“The journey should be enjoyable as well as productive,” Danny said. “We’re here to build something lasting.”
